Michigan Gears Up for Major Road Closures: Here’s What You Need to Know!

Attention, Michigan residents! As spring gets into full swing, it’s time to buckle up for some roadwork across your beloved state. From Sunday, April 20, until Saturday, April 26, 2025, approximately 60 road projects are set to kick off, meaning there are going to be a lot of road closures that could affect your travel plans. We understand that nobody likes to deal with detours, but these improvements are all about making our roads safer and smoother for everyone!

Key Areas to Keep an Eye On

So where exactly will these road closures be happening? Here are the main players affected, and you might want to grab a pen to take notes!

  • U.S. 131 in Kent County: Expect a right lane closure southbound between Leonard Street and Wealthy Street starting Sunday night. Internally, entrance ramps from eastbound I-196 and Leonard Street will also be closed during this time. The closure will last until Tuesday at 8 p.m. and will get a little tougher as the southbound exit ramp to Wealthy St. is closed from Sunday evening until Thursday evening. Drivers are encouraged to use Martin Luther King Jr. Street/Century Avenue as a detour.
  • I-696 in Oakland County: Beginning Monday morning, westbound lanes will be trimmed down to two between Southfield Road and Lahser Road for some important median work. A complete closure of this stretch will take place from May 9 for about ten days as the Church Street plaza bridge undergoes demolition.
  • U.S. 23 in Genesee County: Get ready for northbound left lane closures from Silver Lake Road to mile marker 81 starting Sunday morning and running until Thursday evening. Keep in mind that entry to U.S. 23 at Silver Lake Road won’t be an option during this time.
  • U.S. 31: Watch out for reduced speeds between Colby Road and Fruitvale Road in Muskegon County starting Monday morning due to maintenance. The right lane will be closed until Tuesday at 6 p.m.
  • U.S. 31 in Emmet County: Hold on tight – both directions will be fully closed between N. Conway Road and Blumke Road for an entire month starting at midnight Monday. You can take N. Conway Road and Powers Road as your detours.

More Notable Closures

  • U.S. 12 in Wayne County: Lane closures on eastbound Michigan Avenue between Venoy Road and Middlebelt Road will be in effect during daytime hours, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, lasting into early May.
  • M-46 in Gratiot County: Starting Monday, expect one lane closed in each direction between U.S. 127 and Watson Street, with plans to wrap things up around Tuesday evening.
  • I-96 in Muskegon County: You’ve been warned: one lane will be closed between Ellis Road and Farr Road during the day on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Grandview Parkway in Grand Traverse County: A left lane closure westbound will be in action between Front Street and Division Street all week, as part of ongoing construction work that will extend well into October.
  • I-94 in Washtenaw County: Brace yourself for a closure of two westbound lanes between M-14 and I-94 starting Friday night and continuing through the weekend, with a complete closure slated from midnight to 7 a.m. Saturday.

Drive Smart!

Remember, these road projects are all dependent on the weather, so if Mother Nature decides to throw a curveball, plans could change. As always, it’s crucial to slow down and adhere to the posted work zone signage. Keeping our roads safe is a team effort, folks!

If you want to stay updated on the latest construction projects, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has got you covered! They even offer an online map where you can pinpoint all the current road construction projects happening throughout the state.
