A 14-year-old boy was killed and another teen injured during a violent incident that took place at the Michigan State Fair in Novi on Saturday night. The two victims, both young Detroit boys, arrived for an evening of fun and celebration, unaware of the fatal turn of events that awaited them. The shocking incident occurred just before 10 p.m. in the parking lot of the Suburban Collection Showplace.
Officers stationed at the Michigan State Fair reported hearing gunshots coming from the area of the parking lot near Grand River Avenue. Initial radio traffic suggested an active shooter on the scene, leading to a rapid and substantial response from several surrounding law enforcement agencies.
While the incident is not fully resolved, authorities have confirmed that the shooting is an isolated event, occurring after an argument that allegedly spanned multiple communities throughout the week. The tension culminated in the tragic shooting on Saturday night. As of the latest update, there are no suspects in custody.
Both 14-year-old victims were shot during the confrontation, sustaining severe injuries. The two boys immediately received medical attention and were transported to the hospital. Despite the best efforts of the medical teams, one of the boys succumbed to his injuries. The other victim, thankfully, is in stable condition, according to the hospital report.
The Michigan State Fair committee released a statement following the incident. The committee expressed their deep grievance at the loss and concern for those affected. They reiterated their commitment to the safety of their guests and participants and assured the public that they had increased safety measures during the fair, including weapon detection systems and increased police presence.
In response to the tragedy, the State Fair restricted its hours of operation for the remainder of the fair. The entry standoff commenced at 6pm, with the fairgrounds closing at 7pm for Sunday and Monday. The State Fair also imposed a new policy requiring attendees under the age of 18 to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
While there are limited leads in the case, the authorities have urged anyone with any information regarding the incident to contact the Novi Police Department. Their hope is that public assistance will help them in their ongoing investigation and prevent such a tragedy from happening in the future.
Anyone with information about the shooting should contact the Novi Police Department at 248-348-7100.
