In a tragic incident on Friday morning, a driver was killed after smashing into a Michigan State Police officer’s vehicle on I-75 in Lincoln Park. The officer was pulling over a semi-truck on the northbound side when the accident occurred around 8:40 a.m.
According to police reports, the officer was stationed on the right shoulder of the motorway in his patrol vehicle when a Ford Explorer rammed into the back of his car, pushing it into the rear of the semi-truck that the officer had pulled over.
“The officer was executing his duty on the side, on the shoulder of the road according to his training, when he was unfortunately struck,” said Michigan State Police Director Col. James F. Grady II, who lamented the dreadful incident.
Due to the violent crash, the officer had to be extracted from his patrol vehicle. He was immediately taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital, where, at the time of the accident, he was alert and responsive. The officer’s quick decisions made under the adverse circumstances have been highly praised.
The driver of the Ford Explorer, unfortunately, could not survive the crash. The identity of the driver is yet to be disclosed by the authorities pending notification of next of kin.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of the Michigan Move Over Law. According to the law, drivers are required to slow down or move over for police, fire, EMS, and road service workers, including tow trucks and MDOT courtesy vehicles, whenever they have their emergency lights activated.
If there is not enough space to move over, drivers are legally obligated to slow down to at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit when approaching the vehicle and pass with caution.
The incident on I-75 on Friday morning was a sobering reminder of the importance of abiding by these rules. The Michigan State Police have reiterated the significance of safety measures that the public must adopt to ensure the well-being of law enforcement officers who are often in vulnerable positions during traffic stops on highways.
The accident caused significant traffic disturbances, with authorities closing the freeway all morning on Friday. The freeway was ultimately reopened shortly before noon.
An extensive investigation into the crash is in progress, with authorities expediting their enquiries due to the fatality involved. The Michigan State Police Department has extended their condolences to the family of the deceased and assured them that every possible angle will be thoroughly investigated.
