Since taking over from interim President Teresa Woodruff in March, Guskiewicz has made it clear that he is here to make impactful changes. Recently, he announced significant leadership reshuffles, notably in the Department of Police and Public Safety. Starting November 11, Mike Yankowski will step into a newly crafted role as the chief of police and executive director of public safety, marking a pivotal shift in campus safety management. By merging the positions of chief safety officer and chief of police, Guskiewicz aims to create a streamlined leadership structure to address safety and policing comprehensively.

Yankowski isn’t new to MSU; he has been part of the community since 2019, where he has earned accolades for setting up a robust community services unit and enhancing police training programs. For now, both interim Chief Safety Officer Doug Monette and Chief of Police Chris Rozman will still be active in their roles to ensure a smooth transition for the university.

A Broader Search and Structural Changes

As Guskiewicz continues to implement new strategies at the university, he announced a national search for a new provost and executive vice president for academic affairs. The search is expected to wrap up by the end of the spring semester, while interim Provost Thomas Jeitschko will maintain his position through the academic year. Adding to the restructuring, the Division of Student Life and Engagement will transition back to being known as Student Affairs, focusing on making services more accessible and engaging for students.

In another notable change, Vennie Gore is set to step into the role of executive vice president for administration by March 2025. These shifts reflect Guskiewicz’s dedication to strengthening the university from various academic angles and ensuring dynamic leadership.

Fundraising for a Brighter Future

In a wonderful initiative, MSU is launching a significant fundraising campaign aimed at supporting student scholarships and success strategies. Guskiewicz comes with a wealth of experience, having led a record-breaking fundraising effort at his previous institution. The new campaign is particularly focused on attracting talented students—expanding scholarship opportunities and introducing a new “first-gen center” to support first-generation college students.

Furthermore, the university has established a fresh scholarship named the Joseph R. and Sarah L. Williams Scholarship, aimed at helping high-achieving students achieve their academic goals. Guskiewicz also intends to explore ways to monetize naming rights for new projects to boost financial support without disrupting campus aesthetics.
