Michigan Student Attacked for Identifying as Jewish

In a concerning incident, a student hailing from Michigan was allegedly attacked, subsequent to revealing his Jewish identity to a group of men. The incident is currently under thorough investigation by the Ann Arbor Police Department.

Circumstances Surrounding the Incident

The assault reportedly took place early on Monday morning, at approximately 12:45 a.m., specifically on the intersection of Hill Street and South Forest. As per the investigators, the 19-year-old student encountered a group of men who inquired about his religious identity. On answering affirmatively when asked if he was Jewish, the young man was subject to aggressive physical assault by the group. Following the attack, the group quickly dispersed and fled the scene.

The victim endured minor injuries, however, they were not severe enough to warrant hospitalization. The incident came to light and was reported later on in the afternoon.

A Joint Statement: AAPD and University of Michigan on the Incidence

Addressing the incident, AAPD police chief Andre Anderson communicated with the University of Michigan authorities and released a joint statement. “Our goal is to discuss safety over the next few weeks”, he stated, emphasizing the joint commitment of the police and university to address the issue. “There is absolutely no place for hate or ethnic intimidation in the city of Ann Arbor. Our department stands against antisemitism and all acts of bias-motivated crimes.”

Adding to the sentiment expressed by the police chief, U-M president Santa Ono also vehemently denounced the assault: “Antisemitism is in direct conflict with the university’s deeply held values of safety, respect and inclusion and has no place within our community.”

Calls for Information and Justice

As the investigation continues to unfold, the AAPD is seeking the public’s help with any information related to the case. They strongly encourage anyone with pertinent information to come forward and contact the tip line at 734-794-6939, or email at tips@a2gov.org. Emphasizing the importance of a safe and inclusive campus, President Ono urged “anyone with knowledge about the incident to share it with DPSS or the Ann Arbor police department,” and assured that justice would be sought for the victim, echoing public sentiment for the responsible parties to be held accountable for their actions.

A Stand Against Hatred

This harrowing incident underscores the importance of continued vigilance against hatred and bias-motivated crimes. It serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle against intolerance in our society. The incident is an urgent call for all stakeholders – ranging from public authorities to private citizens – to redouble their efforts in fostering inclusive, tolerant, and safe communities.
