In an incredibly distressing turn of events, a teenaged boy from Michigan has shared his painful story of being left abandoned in Jamaica by his adoptive parents. This tale is not only harrowing but also shines light on a dark and problematic side of adoption – the abandonment of vulnerable children.
Elijah Goldman, a resident of Traverse City, Michigan, was adopted from Haiti at the age of 11 by a well-off Christian couple. However, a shocking revelation has come to light as 17-year-old Elijah has reportedly spent over seven months alone in Jamaica, after being extracted from an abusive American-run boarding school in the country. His adoptive parents ostensibly abandoned him despite allegations of severe abuse at the school resulting in its eventual shutdown.
Jamaican authorities reportedly discovered and freed Elijah from the boarding school following allegations of abuse and neglect. The troubled teenager characterized his ordeal as a continuous fight for survival, waiting for someone to rescue him and take him back home. His desperate and heart-wrenching message, “They abandoned me…it hurts”, has resonated with child rights activists, stirring up a clamor for justice.
This jarring incident has drawn attention to the issue of adopted children being neglected and abandoned. In some cases, adolescents are shipped off to boarding schools and never seen again. Understandably, children’s rights activists believe this was the fate of Elijah.
In a worrying display of parental abdication, Elijah’s adoptive parents dispatched him to a boarding school in 2023 because of behavioral issues and subsequently abandoned him. Despite their son enduring alleged brutalities, Elijah’s parents never bothered to visit him or attend his court hearings, where he bravely testified about the atrocities committed by the school authorities.
The parents initially responded to numerous attempts at contact, stating that they would consider responding if their questions were sent in writing. Despite the provided queries, both individuals remained silent, raising grave concerns about their moral obligations and parental responsibilities.
Children’s rights attorney Dawn Post thankfully stepped in to advocate for Elijah. Post stated that this is an outrageous incident and alleged that Elijah’s parents are receiving preferential treatment from Michigan authorities because they are adoptive, not biological. This preferential treatment is perhaps even more unsettling against the backdrop of their alleged lack of initiative to bring their adopted son back home.
In a heartening turn of events, Elijah is back in the U.S., finally within reach of safety and normalcy. However, his future remains unsettlingly uncertain. Upon landing in Florida, Elijah was continuously passed between state authorities, with neither Florida nor Michigan claiming responsibility for him. His adoptive parents, remorsefully, did not meet him at the airport.
After being notified that he is not under their jurisdiction, Elijah was flown to Traverse City, Michigan, without prior knowledge of who might meet him there. Upon his arrival, he was met by his adoptive father. In a bewildering interchange with the Child Protective Services, he was informed that he needed to travel to Utah with his dad to join his appointed legal guardian and secure an apartment.
Despite finally seeing his adoptive parents, Elijah is still ridden with anxiety and confusion, as his future continues to linger in ambiguity. He yearns for a fresh start, hoping for the opportunity to go back to school, rejoin his track team, work, and prepare for a promising future.
Seemingly, the tale of this American teenager is a loud cry for honesty, love, and commitment in the world of adoption. Let it serve as a reminder that adopted children deserve the same tender, love, and care as biological ones – and are in no way second best.
