This win not only marked Michigan’s second victory over a ranked opponent this season but also ended MSU’s three-game winning streak in this nail-biting rivalry.
The game kicked off with Michigan State establishing an early lead, gaining momentum with an 18-13 advantage after the first quarter. Their confidence was apparent, but the Wolverines were not about to go down without a fight. The second quarter saw Michigan unleash their competitive spirit, igniting a 7-0 run that pushed them into the lead. As the third quarter wrapped up, Michigan held a narrow 49-44 lead. But the Wolverines weren’t finished. In the final quarter, they surged ahead, reaching an 11-point lead with a critical three-pointer from Syla Swords with just over seven minutes remaining, extending the score to 59-48.
The free-throw line became a significant factor as Michigan went a remarkable 12-for-13 in the final quarter alone, demonstrating their clutch performance under pressure. Meanwhile, the Spartans struggled, shooting a mere 31.8% from the field during the game and a disappointing 27.4% in the last three quarters.
Syla Swords was the star for Michigan, lighting up the scoreboard with 19 points, alongside five rebounds and four assists in an impressive 37 minutes. Olivia Olson followed closely with 14 points and seven rebounds while Mila Holloway rounded out the trio of double-digit contributors with 10 points, four rebounds, and five assists.
On the other side, it was Grace VanSlooten leading the Spartans with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. However, it wasn’t enough to topple the Wolverines’ strategy and teamwork.
With this victory, head coach Kim Barnes Arico achieved a remarkable milestone, tying John Beilein as the winningest coach in Michigan basketball history, now boasting an impressive 278 career wins.
