First Case of Mpox Reported in Wayne County

19th Mpox Case in Michigan this Year

In Wayne County, public health officials have confirmed the county’s first case of mpox, which is also the 19th reported case in Michigan in 2024. Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, has received worldwide attention since a global outbreak was declared in 2022.

Currently, tests are underway to establish if this case in Wayne County involves the new strain that has been responsible for the ongoing outbreak in sub-Saharan Africa.

Mpox: What You Need to Know

According to health officials, mpox is a viral illness that spreads mainly through direct contact with infectious rash, scabs, or bodily fluids. It can also be transmitted through respiratory secretions during prolonged, face-to-face interaction. An individual infected with mpox generally experiences flu-like symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, and respiratory symptoms before the onset of a rash resembling pimples or blisters. These symptoms typically occur within 21 days post exposure.

An infected person is contagious from the time symptoms commence till the scabs fall off and a new layer of skin forms. This process usually lasts between 2 to 4 weeks.

However, it’s vital to note that mpox does not spread easily from person to person.

Stay Informed, Stay Protected

Public health officials are urging those at risk to ensure they have received the mpox vaccine. The vaccine requires two doses with a 4-week interval in between for full protection. Those who have received only one dose are advised to get their second shot as soon as possible.

Mpox vaccines and testing are available at no cost or at a reduced cost at the Wayne County Public Health Division.
