This protest reflects growing public concern over corporate power in politics, resonating with similar movements across the nation.

Protests Erupt in Manhattan Against Elon Musk’s Influence

On a lively Saturday afternoon, around 300 demonstrators gathered outside the Tesla showroom located in the Meatpacking District, Manhattan. The protest, spearheaded by the political action group Rise and Resist, kicked off around 1 p.m. and brought attention to what many see as concerning influence of Elon Musk in U.S. government.

A Colorful Display of Discontent

Protesters showed up with an assortment of vibrant signs, boldly proclaiming their displeasure with phrases like “Don’t Buy a Swasticar,” “No Dictators in the USA,” and “Musk Is Out of Control.” Attendees expressed a strong belief that Musk’s alignment with former President Trump has given him a significant amount of power within the government, which they view as a dangerous move.

Voicing Concerns from Afar

Among the crowd were participants Brian Flanagan and his wife, Shawn Haugen, who made the journey from New Rochelle in Westchester to join the cause. They highlighted the significance of making their voices heard, believing that it is essential to take a stand instead of simply complaining from the sidelines. With tensions rising over government decisions, the protest was framed as a necessary expression of dissent against unchecked power.

Thousands Join in Spirit

As protesters voiced their opinions, chants filled the air, calling for an end to “business as usual” and denouncing both Musk and Trump as “traitors.” Their persistent calls echoed a theme dubbed “Pull the Plug on Musk,” which emphasized Musk’s control over the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, and its implications for essential public services.

Tensions and Arrests

As fervor mounted, tensions heightened when two individuals entered the Tesla showroom and refused to leave, resulting in six more protesters sitting defiantly in front of the entrance, choosing to ignore police orders to disperse. The protest did witness some minor chaos—a glass door at the entrance sustained damage, sparking comments about the fragility of Tesla’s glass doors.

Legal Fallout

In the aftermath, nine protesters received arrests, with eight facing trespassing charges while one encountered a minor violation. Although specific details on the charges were not revealed, the police confirmed the enforcement of law at the scene. One protester left with a desk appearance ticket, asserting their rights to stand against Musk’s influence.

The Bigger Picture

Rise and Resist aimed to shine a spotlight on what they describe as Musk’s “unelected” power and his growing say over crucial areas like healthcare and disaster relief. The message resonated nationwide as similar demonstrations sprang up across the United States, with participants encouraging Tesla owners to sell their vehicles and boycott the company altogether.

United in Dissent

Passionate individuals at the protest came together for varied yet interconnected reasons. Longtime member Jaime Bauer vowed to stand against Musk’s influence while sociologist Naomi Braine represented her students reliant on federal funding. Many attendees highlighted their desire to impact national policies and ensure that the voices of the community are heard over corporate interests.

A Growing Movement

As the event unfolded, participant Jay W. Walker noted a turnout larger than expected—an indication of rising public anger towards the actions and influence of figures like Trump and Musk. The atmosphere buzzed with shared determination, as protestors continued to chant their heartfelt sentiments against what they perceive as threats to democracy.
