Canton Township, Michigan, is reeling from a shocking incident that took place recently, resulting in the untimely death of a local man, Nathan Morris. Just a day before this tragic event, the alleged shooter, Devereaux Johnson, had been accused of a serious crime involving a woman and her children on an interstate in Indiana.
On August 9, while many were enjoying their day, police in Indiana were investigating a shooting that occurred on Interstate 94 in Chesterton. A woman traveling with her two kids was struck by gunfire. Reports indicate that Johnson allegedly fired several shots at the vehicle while engaging in reckless driving behavior, such as “brake checking.” The woman, who fortunately survived but was wounded in the leg, described the frightening encounter, claiming Johnson was trying to intimidate her before the shots were fired.
Local authorities in Canton Township were promptly alerted about the situation. That evening, a police officer arrived at Johnson’s home, where they spotted him driving a gray Audi, linked to the earlier shooting in Indiana. Unfortunately, police were unable to take action at that moment, as Indiana State Police needed time to gather more information and secure a warrant.
Fast forward to August 10, in what should have been just another peaceful day in the neighborhood, things took a tragic turn. Johnson found himself enraged over a minor incident involving Morris’s daughter, who had been playing in Johnson’s mulch. In a chilling escalation, he allegedly shot Morris as he walked with his family, resulting in Morris’s death.
This violent act has led to serious charges for Johnson, including first-degree murder, possession of a firearm as a convicted felon, and multiple counts of felony firearm offenses. At his arraignment, law enforcement raised serious concerns about Johnson’s potential danger to the community, emphasizing his troubled history with violent incidents.
According to records, Johnson’s history is marred by a series of run-ins with police over the last two and a half years. From previous assaults on neighbors to a disturbing sexual assault conviction in Nevada back in 2005, Johnson’s behavior had raised multiple red flags. The community was already aware of his notorious reputation, with reports indicating numerous interactions with law enforcement.
In one notable incident in April 2022 at a local gym, Johnson claimed another patron was staring at him, leading him to call the police. However, video evidence showed that Johnson had actually approached the man first. This incident shed light on Johnson’s often troubled perspective on what constituted a threat, further complicating his already checkered past.
In a separate incident just weeks before the shooting of Morris, Johnson was implicated in a confrontation involving a worker near his home. Described as irate by witnesses, he reportedly threatened violence during a minor dispute, demonstrating a pattern that many in the community found alarming.
Canton Township Police Chief Chad Baugh has publicly stated that the department was aware of Johnson and his issues. “This was a horrible event, and while we cannot change the past, we must ensure that we are here to support our community,” Baugh said, calling for healing and closure in the wake of this tragic event.
As of now, Johnson is being held without bail in the Wayne County Jail, awaiting further legal proceedings. His attorney has not issued any comments regarding the case, keeping the public in suspense about Johnson’s defense strategy as the charges unfold. Meanwhile, the community of Canton Township is left to grapple with the aftermath of this violent confrontation and mourn the loss of a beloved neighbor.
As time goes on, the community hopes for clarity and justice, seeking to restore a sense of peace in what has undoubtedly been a distressing chapter for everyone involved.
