In a thrilling development for the world of medicine, Northside Hospital Gwinnett has proudly selected seven exceptional chief residents as part of their Graduate Medical Education program for the 2025-2026 academic year. These remarkable individuals will embark on their residency journeys, culminating in 2026, and they’re ready to make a significant impact in their fields!

Meet the New Chief Residents!

Leading this distinguished group is Shreya Mahadevan, MBBS, a native of the United States who has deep roots in southern India. With a passion for infectious diseases, Shreya is excited to dive into her role and tackle the health challenges that come her way.

Next up is Ishan Panchal, D.O., hailing from Gainesville, Florida. Ishan brings his impressive educational background from the University of Florida and the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine. His interests span infectious disease, critical care, and lifestyle medicine—a diverse mix that will surely serve him well as he navigates his chief resident journey!

Then we have Omama “Omi” Rahmany, D.O., a true local from Lawrenceville who has a strong educational foundation from the University of Georgia and Lincoln Memorial University DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine. Omi’s focus lies in internal medicine, with hopes of pursuing a fellowship in palliative care to help those with serious illnesses.

Another shining star of this group is Sidra Shakil, D.O., a Georgia native and proud graduate from UGA. Sidra has a background in research related to child attention and autism, showing her dedication to improving pediatric health.

Also on the team is Ashley Turek, D.O., who is not only from Atlanta but also raised in Fayetteville. Ashley is keen on patient advocacy and lifestyle medicine, aiming to promote overall wellness in her future practice.

We can’t forget about Aissatou “Aisha” Ndiaya, M.D., who shares her roots with Atlanta. After graduating from Brenau University and Ross University School of Medicine, Aisha is ready to focus on maternal health advocacy and supporting underserved communities.

Last but certainly not least is Knox Young, M.D.. This talented individual comes from Newcastle, Washington, and graduated from Albany Medical College. Knox has interests in both family and sports medicine, showcasing his diverse medical interests.

A Celebratory Commencement

On a related note, Northside Hospital Gwinnett also hosted a joyful commencement ceremony to honor 28 physicians who recently completed their Graduate Medical Education program. This momentous event took place on June 14 in Lawrenceville and celebrated the ninth group of primary care and transitional-year residents. Graduates are beaming as many have secured spots in prestigious programs, including major institutions like the Mayo Clinic and Brigham & Women’s Hospital.

Transitioning Leaders

As the program gears up for the next academic year, five new chief residents have been appointed for the 2024-2025 academic year. The team consists of Dr. Shaen Deimling, Dr. Walid Hmissa, Dr. Kiara Jamison, Dr. Bryan Kamalakar, and Dr. Richard Khanal. Each one brings unique strengths and backgrounds, ready to lead the way for the next generation of medical professionals.

Ode to an Exceptional Minister of Medicine

Finally, a shout-out to Dr. Leela Maxa, who was recently recognized as an Atlanta magazine Top Doctor for 2024 by her peers. Specializing in radiation oncology, Dr. Maxa has dedicated over 25 years to serving the Gwinnett community—an inspiration to us all!
