If you live in Novi, you may have heard about the buzz surrounding a new play space that’s truly unlike anything you’ve ever seen. We Rock the Spectrum Novi officially opened its doors last month, bringing with it a fantastic opportunity for kids of all abilities to learn, play, and connect. With a heartwarming mission and a variety of cool features, this place is already proving to be a hit among families in the area.
Reflecting on the joy of the grand opening, Yushu Zhou, the owner, revealed a touching moment that captured the essence of this community space. “The week of the grand opening, I saw two little girls, both on the spectrum, instantly bonding while playing grocery store. Their parents couldn’t believe how easily they formed a friendship,” Zhou shared with a smile. She added that this kind of magic is not just about play — it’s about fostering connections. “These moments inspire the kids, and it’s so special to see them gaining confidence through the friends they are making.”
One of the highlights for Zhou was when the parents exchanged numbers for a playdate afterward. “That’s what this place is all about – creating genuine connections,” she said.
So, what makes this 6,400 square-foot facility so special? From a cozy infant area for little ones to learn tummy time, to a teen area where older kids can chill out, there’s something for everyone. The gym features 12 pieces of sensory equipment designed for various developmental needs. Kids can swing, climb, balance, and zip down a 50-foot zip line – a clear favorite among the younger crowd!
But it’s not just the equipment that sets We Rock the Spectrum apart. There are also two special rooms: a calming room for kids who might feel overwhelmed after a sensory-rich play session, and a therapy room where they can work with occupational or speech therapists privately. Zhou emphasizes that the gym is a space for everybody, whether they are neurodivergent or neurotypical.
Parents, listen up! There’s a plethora of activities lined up, including classes such as Little Ninja, tumbling, arts and crafts, and even a ‘Mommy and Me’ sensory story time. Plus, they’ve got plans for Friday night events like ‘Parents Night Out’! For those looking to celebrate special occasions, the facility offers five different birthday party packages to choose from, catering especially to the neurodivergent community.
For Zhou, the path to opening this facility has been deeply personal. After moving to the U.S. 15 years ago and attending prestigious schools like Cornell and Harvard, life took a dramatic turn after the birth of her son, Oliver, just before the COVID lockdown. Zhou found herself yearning for a way to create something meaningful for her child and their community. “This gym is not just for kids; it’s for parents too. I want to empower families and create a supportive network,” she said.
Building this network hasn’t been easy. Zhou reached out to over 200 local businesses to spread the word about her new venture, facing the challenge of being a newcomer with no established relationships. “I know it takes time, but I have faith that with community support, we’ll make this a beloved space for all,” she stated confidently.
As the excitement continues to grow, families are flocking to We Rock the Spectrum Novi to take part in what promises to be a wonderful experience for kids and parents alike. Whether you’re venturing in for open play, lessons, or community events, you’re sure to find a warm and welcoming atmosphere conducive to learning, growing, and having fun. So gather up the kids, and head on over to be part of this amazing journey!
