A man named Paul Whelan, hailing from Novi, had some tough words for Russian President Vladimir Putin following his discharge from a Russian prison. After being incarcerated for more than five years on allegations of espionage, Whelan made it clear after his release that he has no intentions of ever returning to Russia.
“I’m looking forward to seeing my family and just recuperating from five years, seven months, and five days of absolute nonsense,” Whelan stated. “This is how Putin runs his government. This is how Putin runs his country.”
Whelan’s criticism of the Russian leader comes as he returns to the U.S., nearly six years after his arrest. He was taken into custody while visiting Russia for a wedding. Despite there being no trial nor evidence produced against him, Whelan was sentenced to 16 years in prison back in 2020.
Whelan was one of approximately two dozen individuals granted freedom as part of a highly significant prisoner exchange, the largest of its kind in post-Soviet history, which transpired after months of discussions and compromises.
Together with two other released detainees, Whelan touched down in San Antonio, Texas, for medical evaluations last Thursday. Following his release, Whelan made sure to express his gratitude towards his family for their persistent pressure on the U.S. government.
While in Texas, the first activity on Whelan’s mind seems to be savoring a good steak. However, Whelan has yet to disclose when he plans to make his way back to Michigan.
This release and subsequent mentions of secret negotiations showcase the complex diplomatic relations between U.S. and Russian authorities. Nonetheless, this incident serves as an important reminder of the challenges faced by citizens overseas.
