This isn’t just any conference—it’s hailed as the largest collaborative robot conference in the nation!

Among the attendees was Andrew Dowd, representing a major tier one exhaust manufacturer with an eye on adopting cobots for their end-of-line quality inspection processes. Dowd shared that opinions on these robots vary among employees—some welcome the added help, while others have worries about job security. This is a common concern as automation evolves. The good news? Cobots are designed to work safely alongside human workers, enhancing productivity rather than replacing it.

The applications for these handy robots are vast and versatile, including welding, painting, machine tending, assembly, screwdriving, and even palletizing commercial goods! Various companies at the conference, like Kinetic Technologies and Hirebotics, offered live demonstrations showcasing cobots in action with the help of physical AI.

Meeting the Demand for Advanced Manufacturing

As industries continue to evolve, the demand for automation solutions is rising, and this is where cobots come into play. David Cappellani, a regional account manager for Universal Robots, emphasized the various industries benefiting from cobots, including aerospace, automotive, consumer electronics, pharmaceuticals, and even the charming world of woodworking. Universal Robots is based right in Novi and has made a significant impact with around 90,000 installations of cobots worldwide—a testament to the growing reliance on this technology!

Back to Andrew Dowd’s company—they operate a vibrant fleet of 300 industrial robots while currently facing staffing shortages. Dowd pointed out that integrating cobots won’t push employees out the door. Instead, it will transform their roles to focus on new operations, alleviating some of the burdens of repetitive tasks. With AI sensors incorporated into cobots, consistency in quality control is expected to rise dramatically, providing enhanced standards for parts.

Data-Driven Production for the Future

The company is keen on implementing a cobot combined with a vision sensor that promises thorough quality assurance, leading to a whopping 100% quality on outgoing products! Data captured during inspections will be safely stored in a database, allowing for better tracking and trends analysis of parts.
