NOVI — On a brisk autumn evening, the crowds gathered at Northville High School on October 18 for a spirited showdown between the Novi Wildcats and their long-time rivals, the Northville Mustangs. The game itself was thrilling, ending in a tight score of 27-25 in favor of Northville. But what made that day truly special wasn’t just the football on the field—it was the warmth of community spirit ignited by the first-ever “Baseline Blitz” tailgate fundraiser.
In a unique twist that combined nostalgia with good-hearted rivalry, the Novi Educational Foundation teamed up with the Northville Educational Foundation. According to Kathryn Macguire, President of the Novi Educational Foundation, “The rivalry runs long and deep.” Yet, the two educational foundations showed us all how community teamwork can transcend competition.
This idea has been in talks for years, but it finally came to life thanks to the collaborative efforts of Sue Collins Schroeder from Novi and Kate Mitchell from Northville. “It has come together so brilliantly at this juncture,” Macguire said, reflecting on the planning that started in July.
The day kicked off with an array of activities designed to bring families together. From delicious food stalls to entertaining games, and even a silent auction, there was something for everyone. Children and adults alike were delighted by the presence of Roary, the Detroit Lions mascot, who added a special thrill to the festivities.
Attendees participated in several fundraisers, including a 50/50 raffle where half of the proceeds went to each of the foundations. There was also a fun donations competition that utilized QR codes for easy contributions. Families of young kids even got a chance to greet the football players as they made their entrance onto the field for just a $25 donation!
Middle and high school students were not left out either! They had a chance to try their luck in a raffle with an exciting twist—throwing footballs into a shopping cart for a top prize of a $100 gift certificate. Additionally, lucky high schoolers earned the chance to sit on special couches at the game, providing a comfy and exciting way to enjoy the rivalry.
The weekend before the big game even saw community members participating in a 5K run, further boosting the fundraising efforts. “It was a FANTASTIC week of building community,” Collins-Schroeder noted, emphasizing the sense of togetherness felt throughout the event.
While the goal was to raise at least $10,000 for each school, the results far surpassed expectations! The Novi Educational Foundation proudly reported a whopping $22,000 raised, and combined with Northville, they gathered a fantastic total of $45,000. “While Novi fell just short of winning the challenge, raising over $22,000 for Novi is an incredible achievement,” Schroeder stated in a letter to supporters.
All the funds collected will go directly to programs that state funding doesn’t cover—think therapy dogs in schools, teacher grants, and scholarships for students in need. Programs that enrich the educational experience for both Novi and Northville students are at the heart of this fundraising effort. The money supports areas like the outdoor education area at Novi Meadows and other engaging educational ventures.
The collaboration has set a sparkling precedent for community engagement between the two districts, and both foundations have announced plans to join forces again next year, especially with the next game being held on Novi’s home turf.
All in all, it was a beautiful display of community, competition, and commitment to education. Here’s hoping for an even bigger turnout next year!
