Novi City Proposes Exciting $120 Million Bond for Public Safety Update
In the vibrant city of Novi, big changes are on the horizon! The City Council has just approved a proposal for a hefty $120 million bond aimed at overhauling four out of five public safety buildings. This initiative is set to hit the ballot on August 5, 2025, and residents are already buzzing with curiosity.
Why Now? A Look at Our Aging Infrastructure
The city’s current public safety facilities are showing their age, clocking in at over 40 years old. It’s no secret that these buildings are no longer cutting it for the hard-working men and women of the Police and Fire Departments. From space constraints to outdated technology, these facilities are more than just old—they’re limiting the effectiveness of our public safety teams. Residents might not know it, but these essential services require modern spaces that cater to the needs of a diverse workforce.
The Financials: What Will This Cost Residents?
Now, let’s talk numbers. If the bond is approved, Novi homeowners can expect to see an annual tax increase ranging between $125 and $375—dependent on your home’s size. For the average homeowner presenting a median home value of around $400,000, this translates to about a $200 increase in yearly taxes. It’s a step toward ensuring our safety services are housed in great facilities.
Where Will the Funds Go?
The big bucks will be put to good use! Approximately 1 mill of the bond will be dedicated to the creation of a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility on Lee BeGole Drive. This expansive 78,500-square-foot building will co-house both the Police Department and Fire Station #1, with the project budgeted at a striking $91.85 million.
A couple of new fire stations are also in the works! Fire Station #2 and Fire Station #3 will debut as 14,500-square-foot facilities in north Novi and southeast Novi, costing $13.15 million and $13 million, respectively. And let’s not forget about Fire Station #4, which will keep its existing spot but receive necessary improvements worth around $2 million.
Meeting Modern Needs
The conversation about these changes has been simmering for at least four years. Current police facilities are cramped and do not support the needs of a growing number of personnel. Right now, there isn’t any private space for sensitive discussions, which is a vital part of serving our community effectively. And when it comes to the fire departments, the lack of suitable facilities for female firefighters, including bathrooms and showers, is a significant concern. Furthermore, there aren’t decontamination zones for our brave firefighters to clean their gear after hazardous exposure.
What’s Next?
If the community gives the thumbs up to the bond proposal, planning will kick off in fall 2026, with construction projected to span about five years. That means Novi could soon have a much more modern and efficient public safety infrastructure!
Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Community Engagement About the Bond
To keep residents informed and involved, community informational meetings will be held at various public safety buildings from May to July 2025. Residents can also invite representatives to their homeowners association meetings for a more in-depth discussion about the bond proposal. It’s time to join the conversation and ensure Nobis’ public safety is well-prepared for the future!
The proposed bond represents a significant step forward in ensuring that the city of Novi can meet the growing demands for public safety while keeping everyone informed and engaged in the process. So, get ready to make your voice heard at the polls!
