Michigan Man, Paul Whelan, Blames Putin After Release From Russian Confinement

Published August 2, 2024

A man from Novi, Michigan, Paul Whelan, was recently released from Russia where he had been detained for over five years on espionage charges. Paul expressed his relief and frustration during a press conference upon his return to the U.S.

Major Prisoner Swap Deal

Whelan was set free as a part of a significant prisoner swap deal that saw two dozen people released, according to the White House. Labelled as the largest prisoner exchange in the post-Soviet era, it involved several months of intense negotiations.

Strong Words for Putin

Straight from the horse’s mouth, Whelan claimed he is never returning to Russia. In his own words, he said he is looking forward to seeing his family and recuperating from – “five years, seven months, and five days of absolute nonsense.” He was quite critical of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the way he runs the government and the country.

The Road to Arrest

It all started nearly six years ago when Whelan was arrested on espionage charges while attending a friend’s wedding in Russia. No trial was conducted, no evidence presented, yet in 2020, Russian authorities sentenced Paul to 16 years in confinement.

Finally, Freedom!

Whelan, along with two others who were released, landed in San Antonio, Texas, for medical evaluation. He expressed his gratitude towards his family for their unwavering support, and to everyone who wished him well. Whelan also shared that one of the first things he’d like to do in Texas is enjoy a good steak. At the moment, there is no word on when he plans to return to Michigan.
