Plymouth: A Fresh Wind for Outdoor Dining
Big news for food lovers and restaurant goers in Plymouth: the City Commission rolled out a brand new five-year ordinance that will keep outdoor and patio dining alive and thriving throughout the downtown area! On Monday night, the commission officially finalized plans that allow local restaurants to continue offering outdoor dining on sidewalks and even on platforms set up in front of their establishments.
Community Response Makes a Difference
This change comes as a direct response to the concerns raised back in July when the original proposals were met with a resounding sigh from the community, local business owners, and the public alike. The initial plans suggested hiking up public usage fees and scaling down many of the popular patio spaces that folks have come to love during warmer months. Imagine a summer evening spent dining al fresco, only to find that your favorite patio setting was being downsized? Most restaurant owners were clear: they wouldn’t even open their patios under those conditions.
Listening to the community’s voice, the commission decided to revise its proposal after dismissing an earlier amendment in August. Now—thanks to that feedback—restaurants will pay just $2.50 per square foot for outdoor space, instead of the hefty $15 per square foot they initially faced. That’s a huge win for local eateries and their patrons!
What’s New with the Ordinance?
With this new ordinance, there are some operational guidelines to keep in mind. All patios will need to be taken down and properly stored each November, with the option to set them up again starting in March. The goal is to ensure everything passes inspections and is ready for an exciting April 1 grand opening. The ordinance also keeps walkability in mind. Instead of the previously suggested nine-foot setbacks, most areas will maintain a six-foot distance from sidewalks, with Main Street bumping up to seven feet in areas where sidewalks are wider.

One of the more delightful aspects of this new plan is the added greenery it brings to Plymouth. As part of this initiative, restaurants are encouraged to install flower boxes along the rails of their patios. Not only will this beautify the space, but it will also enhance the inviting atmosphere of dining outdoors.

Mayor Nick Moroz couldn’t agree more, highlighting how proud he is of the collaboration between the restaurant owners, the Downtown Development Authority, the Chamber of Commerce, and the many residents who provided their insights. “This policy will allow us to offer a high-quality patio dining experience vital to continue the vibrancy of Downtown Plymouth and the quality of life that benefits our entire community,” he shared.
