News Summary

The Michigan Department of Transportation announces a major infrastructure project to revamp the M-14 and I-96 corridors, starting in February 2024. The public is invited to a meeting to discuss plans, which entail significant upgrades to improve traffic flow and safety. The initial phase, costing approximately $139 million, focuses on the eastbound lanes. Various traffic control measures will be implemented to minimize disruption during the multi-year project. Residents can stay updated through the dedicated project website.

Major Infrastructure Overhaul Planned for M-14 and I-96 in Livonia and Plymouth Township

Exciting news is on the horizon for residents of Livonia and Plymouth Township! The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is gearing up for a significant overhaul of the M-14 and I-96 corridors, and you won’t want to miss the upcoming public meeting to learn all about it.

Get Involved!

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 12, as MDOT will hold a public gathering at Plymouth Township Hall from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This is an open invitation for community partners, local businesses, and city representatives to join in the conversation about the future of these crucial roadways.

What’s the Plan?

The total cost of the project is expected to be around $139 million, and it’s set to kick off with the first phase of construction. This initial phase will focus on rebuilding the eastbound side of M-14 and I-96 stretching from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road. Work is slated to begin in late February 2024 and aims for completion by late 2025.

The Timeline

If you take your daily commute on this stretch, you’ll need to brace yourself for some changes. The eastbound lanes will undergo reconstruction first, with the westbound lanes following suit in 2025. Given that this area sees a whopping 125,000 vehicles each day, MDOT is planning traffic control measures to keep things flowing as smoothly as possible.

What to Expect

During the construction period, one eastbound lane will be kept open from before Beck Road to Levan Road. However, all entrance and exit ramps from Beck to Newburgh roads will be closed for the duration. If you typically approach I-96 from I-275, you should be aware that those ramps will experience a shutdown for about two months.

Don’t worry too much about westbound traffic, as there will be two open lanes available on M-14/I-96, and all corresponding exit ramps will remain operational during the closures. When 2026 rolls around, travelers can expect two open lanes in each direction, but there will still be several ramp closures in effect.

Trail Update

In a bid to enhance the community, there are also plans to rebuild the Metro Trail alongside M-14 during the 2026 construction season. This will provide even better access for walkers and cyclists in the area.

Bridge Work on the Horizon

Ann Arbor Road (Old M-14) and Edward Hines Drive in Livonia, starting January 6, 2024. Ann Arbor Road will be closed between Newburgh Road and Market Street as a brand new bridge over the Middle Rouge River is built to replace the structure dating back to 1925.

Upcoming Closures

In early spring, Edward Hines Drive will also close for bridge reconstruction, but rest assured—pedestrian access will still be available via a temporary bridge! As icing on the cake, work is planned for late 2025 at the intersections on Ann Arbor Road, specifically at Newburgh and Plymouth roads.
