Plymouth Township Gears Up for Major Roadwork Overhaul
Exciting news is coming from Plymouth Township as local road officials prepare for a significant construction project that’s set to change the daily commute for thousands of drivers. The much-anticipated Michigan 14/Interstate 96 reconstruction project is estimated to cost around $139 million, and it’s expected to begin very soon. To keep everyone in the loop, a public meeting is scheduled for February 12 at the Plymouth Township Hall from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
What’s Happening?
The purpose of the meeting is to provide community members an opportunity to learn about the construction plans and ask questions. Everyone from local businesses to city representatives and interested residents are encouraged to attend. It’s a chance for stakeholders to connect with the project team, share thoughts, and take a closer look at some project exhibits.
The reconstruction project will kick off from Sheldon Road to Newburgh Road along Michigan 14/I-96, an area that sees about 125,000 drivers each day, especially near the Interstate 275 interchange. That’s a lot of folks who will be affected by the upcoming changes!
Timeline of Traffic Changes
So, when can we expect this project to get rolling? Work on the eastbound lanes is projected to start in late February and will run through to late 2025. However, if you’re planning to travel during this time, be prepared for the fact that construction can bring some headaches. In 2025, only one lane will remain open on eastbound Michigan 14 from just before Beck Road to Levan Road and all eastbound entrance and exit ramps will be closed between Beck and Newburgh roads.
Now, if that wasn’t enough, the ramps from Interstate 275 to eastbound I-96 will also be closed for about two months. Other ramp closures are expected to last through the end of 2025. But there’s a silver lining: once 2026 rolls around, two lanes will finally be open going in both directions. Just keep in mind that ramp closures will still be in effect at various times.
Not Just Roads: Trail Improvements Ahead
A little bright side for outdoor enthusiasts is that the Metro Trail will also get some love during the 2026 construction season, making it a double benefit for the community as both roads and trails are upgraded.
