In Detroit, a new loan program is making waves for small business owners in Wayne County. ProsperUs Detroit, a nonprofit community development financial institution, has partnered with the Community Reinvestment Fund, USA (CRF) to help entrepreneurs regain their footing after the challenging economic times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
This loan program specifically targets microenterprises in select zip codes across Wayne County. It offers loans ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 with a fixed interest rate of 7%. Borrowers can also enjoy a 12-month interest-only repayment period. If businesses meet certain conditions, they have the chance to receive up to 20% loan forgiveness.
To be eligible for loan forgiveness, business owners must stay current on their interest payments and complete an educational curriculum provided by ProsperUs Detroit during the first year. This initiative is backed by a generous infusion of $1.5 million, aimed at reinforcing economic resilience and promoting long-term success for local entrepreneurs.
According to Paul Jones, the CEO of ProsperUs Detroit, the partnership with CRF is vital for fostering economic vitality in under-resourced communities. “Together, we’re not just building businesses; we’re constructing pathways to prosperity and sustainable growth, one entrepreneur at a time,” he stated.
The program’s introduction marks an essential step towards revitalizing communities heavily impacted by economic downturns. By providing flexible financing options, it helps small business owners access much-needed capital without the usual burdens associated with loans.
The loan’s terms are designed to cater specifically to microenterprises, especially those that operate in low- to moderate-income areas. Notably, there is no minimum credit score requirement or collateral needed, significantly lowering barriers for many entrepreneurs.
Funds from the loans can be utilized for a range of business needs, including working capital, marketing efforts, debt refinancing, and inventory purchases. This flexibility is crucial for business owners who often face diverse and pressing financial challenges.
Since the launch of the program in May 2024, several businesses have already benefited, including a new luxury speakeasy called Miss Eva’s Detroit, opening soon in the Grandmont Rosedale neighborhood. Its owner, Jay Williams, shared his appreciation for the support from ProsperUs Detroit. He said, “The loan process was smooth, and the potential for loan forgiveness after twelve months of on-time payments makes the capital even more affordable.”
Williams praised ProsperUs for understanding the personal journey of entrepreneurs, not just viewing them through the lens of numbers. “The additional support, from technical assistance to on-site consultations, has been invaluable,” he added.
The partnership between ProsperUs Detroit and CRF underscores the need for collaboration in economic development. Alexis Dishman, Senior Vice President and Small Business Chief Lending Officer at CRF, expressed pride in being part of the program. “This innovative partnership utilizes the strengths of each organization to increase access to flexible capital and specialized services,” she said, highlighting its potential to impact communities positively.
Entrepreneurs in Wayne County who want to learn more about the loan program or check their eligibility are encouraged to visit the ProsperUs Detroit website. With the resources available through this program, many small businesses could soon find the support they need to thrive and grow in the post-pandemic landscape.
