Sponsor Our ArticlesThe Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is launching its second season with new custom jerseys, logos, and team names. The changes are based on fan feedback from the inaugural season. In its first year, the league generated impressive attendance, and with these branding initiatives, the PWHL aims to further legitimize and grow the league.
In an exciting turn of events, the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) is gearing up for its second season with a fantastic new look! As the league kicked off its inaugural season in January 2024, fans were greeted with teams that were simply identified by their city names and team colors. Well, hold onto your hockey sticks because things are about to get a whole lot more vibrant!
This season, the PWHL has taken a giant leap forward by introducing custom jerseys, unique logos, and team names for all six teams. These changes come after a resounding call from fans who wanted traditional team names to enhance their viewing experience. The demand was clear and the league has responded beautifully!
The new jerseys, along with the distinct logos and team identities, will be available for purchase online and are set to hit stores this Thursday. Fans will now have the opportunity to wear more than just the city name – they can proudly display their team’s identity!
Looking back at the PWHL’s first season, it’s important to note that the league gained an impressive following, drawing nearly 400,000 fans across 72 games. This included a phenomenal moment when the league set a world record for attendance at a women’s hockey game with over 21,000 attendees. These numbers showcase how much love and support there is for women’s hockey!
The PWHL was founded in the summer of 2023 and spans cross-border teams from Boston, Minnesota, New York City, Montreal, Ottawa, and Toronto. To bring the new identities to life, the league’s VP of marketing, Kanan Bhatt-Shah, joined forces with a New York design agency called Flower Shop. Within approximately three months, they successfully crafted unique logos and team names that are both meaningful and chant-able!
The team names are quite exciting and deeply linked to each city’s history and culture. Here’s the rundown:
The logos have also been carefully crafted, drawing inspiration from local architecture, seasons, and cultural elements unique to each city. For instance, Boston’s logo features a stylized “B” that resembles an anchor, while Ottawa’s design showcases an electrified red and yellow “C.” There are even some hidden elements for eager fans to find, like a blue “M” in Montreal’s logo and a blocky “NY” graphic lurking behind the New York team’s wordmark.
In an effort to maintain familiarity and an emotional connection with their supporters, the PWHL has preserved the color schemes from the inaugural season. This means that while the teams now have fresh identities, fans won’t have to say goodbye to the looks they grew fond of.
To add to the excitement, Flower Shop has also created additional merchandise, ensuring that fans have an abundance of options beyond just jerseys. Each jersey boasts the team logo prominently on the front, complete with striking striping details and alternate colorways available for those looking to customize their look.
With these branding initiatives, the PWHL aims to further legitimize the league and ensure its continued growth in visibility and support. As the teams prepare to hit the ice again, fans can look forward to an exhilarating season ahead, bunting up in their new gear and cheering on their favorite teams!
