Significant Road Closures This Weekend in Michigan: What You Need to Know!
As the colorful leaves begin to fall and autumn embraces Michigan, residents across the state should be prepared for some changes in their driving routines. This weekend, between Friday, November 8, and Sunday, November 10, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has scheduled over 20 new lane, road, and ramp closures. So, if you’re planning to hit the road for some fall adventures, you’ll want to know what to expect!
Key Construction Areas to Watch
Here are some of the major closures that drivers should be aware of:
- U.S. 24 in Wayne County: Northbound Telegraph Road will have three lanes closed for construction starting at 9 a.m. Friday. This may slow traffic significantly between Grand River Avenue (M-5) and 7 Mile Road until about 3 p.m.
- I-94 in Jackson County: Eastbound I-94 will be closed from the Sandstone Rest Area ramps to the ramp to RA1B, west of Jackson, starting at 6 a.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Saturday. Make sure to plan an alternate route!
- I-96 in Eaton County: Look out for a lane closure on eastbound I-96 between Lansing and Creyts Road at various times. Expect additional congestion between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Friday, and again 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday.
- U.S. 131 in Kent County: Southbound U.S. 131 will have the left two lanes closed for construction from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Keep an eye on any lane shifts near Byron Center.
- I-75 in Genesee County: Northbound I-75 will have three lanes closed from 9 p.m. Friday until noon on Saturday. The number of lanes will then reduce to two until 6 p.m. Saturday.
- U.S. 23 in Livingston County: One lane of northbound U.S. 23, located north of Ann Arbor, will be closed from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday. The construction zone stretches between Lee Road and M-36.
- M-53 in Macomb County: Van Dyke Freeway will close its southbound lanes for the next three weekends to tackle some necessary bridge repairs. This weekend’s closure is set for 5 a.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Monday. Expect a detour using M-59, Mound Road, and 18 Mile Road.
- I-696 in Oakland County: Starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, eastbound I-696 at M-10 will be closed until 7 p.m. Sunday. Be sure to follow any posted detours!
Stay Safe and Informed!
As always, weather can play a big role in construction schedules, so it’s a good idea to stay updated on any changes. Remember to slow down and follow posted signage when driving through work zones. Safety is everyone’s responsibility!
If you want to check out a complete list of road projects and special event closures, you can find it all on the MDOT’s online map and construction list. With those colorful autumn hues in full swing, let’s be safe out there and drive cautiously!
