Road Construction Update: Expect Delays and Closures Across Michigan This Weekend

Road Construction Update: A Busy Weekend Ahead in Michigan

Hey there, Michigan residents! As we glide into the weekend, the buzz of road construction is filling the air. With temperatures still on the pleasant side for late September, crews are hard at work improving our roadways. So, if you’re planning to hit the road from Friday, September 27, through Sunday, September 29, it’s essential to stay updated on the construction closures taking place throughout the state.

What’s Happening on the Roads?

Statewide, there are going to be more than 38 new lane, road, and ramp closures announced by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). These closures add to numerous ongoing construction projects, so be prepared for some detours and delays. The details can get a bit tricky, but here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect this weekend:

  • U.S. 24 in Oakland and Wayne counties: Expect temporary closures on Telegraph Road (U.S. 24) this Friday. The lanes will be closed briefly in both directions between Plymouth Road and I-96, with the northbound closure happening from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and the southbound from 10 a.m. to noon.
  • U.S. 131 in Kent County: If you’re headed northbound on U.S. 131, be aware that one lane will be closed as the ramp to I-96 is undergoing construction.
  • M-115 in Wexford County: A complete closure will happen on M-115, starting Friday night at 7 p.m. and clearing up by 7 a.m. on Saturday. Be ready for a detour!
  • Blue Star Highway in Allegan County: The eastbound ramp to northbound I-196 will be closed starting at 6 a.m. Friday and will reopen by 8 p.m. Saturday.

More Significant Closures to Keep in Mind

  • I-696 in Oakland County: Be cautious as one lane of the M-10/U.S. 24 exit will close to westbound traveling drivers starting at 5 a.m. Friday.
  • M-85 in Wayne County: On Saturday, starting at 7:30 a.m., two right lanes on Fort Street will be closed until 7:30 p.m. on October 11 for permit work.
  • I-75 in Oakland County: Southbound traffic might slow down as there will be daily closures from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. between Giddings Road and South Boulevard.
  • I-94 in Wayne County: Expect some intermittent closures both ways between Hannan Road and I-275 from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. on Saturday.

Helpful Tips for Drivers

As always, it’s super important to stay safe in construction zones. Remember to slow down and adhere to the posted signage to keep yourself and the hardworking crews safe. These projects are all weather-dependent, so let’s hope for clear skies!

If you’d like to check out the complete list of road projects and special event closures, MDOT has an online map and construction list readily available for your convenience.

So, whether you’re commuting, heading out for a weekend adventure, or just running errands, keep these construction updates in mind to make your travels as smooth as possible. Happy driving, and enjoy the beautiful Michigan weekend!
