Tucked away in the industrial section of Livonia, Michigan, is a remarkable car collection that offers a glimpse into the history of racing and the automotive industry. The Roush Automotive Collection is home to around 115 classic cars, many of which are deemed priceless treasures by their owner, Jack Roush, an influential figure in the world of NASCAR and automotive development.
As you enter the collection, the centerpiece is a striking silver Mustang known as “Old Crow.” This one-off vehicle pays homage to Brig. Gen. Bud Anderson, a renowned World War II pilot. Anderson, who recently passed away at the age of 102, signed the car, adding to its historical significance. Jack Roush designed this car to honor his friend Bud, combining his passion for both automobiles and aviation.
Jack Roush, 82, is not just a famous name in racing but also the founder and co-owner of RFK Racing. With his signature Panama hat, he was inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2019. His empire extends beyond racing; Roush is also the chairman of a global product development company that caters to various industries, employing around 3,500 people. Last year, Roush Industries reported revenues of approximately $600 million.
Susan Roush McClenaghan, Roush’s daughter and program manager of the collection, reflects on her father. “He’s simply Dad to us,” she says, despite his immense success in the automotive world. “He had high expectations for us, but he encouraged independence.” Susan herself is a skilled racer, holding six national championship titles and boasting impressive speeds in her career.
The collection was slightly scattered in the past, with various retired race cars displayed in different locations. In the late 1980s, Jack Roush realized the significance of consolidating these cars to preserve the legacy of Roush Enterprises. In 2000, Susan moved the collection to its current location, which spans 30,000 square feet. This space also caters to car enthusiasts who want to see the racing history of Roush up close.
The front section of the collection prominently features around 40 retired NASCAR race cars, many driven by notable racers like Mark Martin. The collection not only serves as a museum but is also a venue for corporate events for Roush Industries, making it an integral part of the NASCAR community.
The culture of fast cars also runs strong within the Roush family. Susan and her husband, Dale, share a love for racing, with Susan recalling how they met at a roller skating rink nearby. Together, they showcase their own collection of vehicles, including Susan’s California Roadster and Dale’s powerful 1960 Ford Falcon built for racing.
The Roush Automotive Collection isn’t just about beautiful cars; it’s filled with stories and moments that define the family’s legacy. A notable piece is a blue 1969 Mustang convertible, which played a pivotal role in launching Jack Roush’s career. After winning a significant race, Roush sold the car to fund his racing endeavors, showcasing how each vehicle tells a story that transcends generations.
Among the various exhibits, a remarkable piece of wreckage from a small aircraft hangs on the wall, representing not only a harrowing accident experienced by Jack Roush but also the miraculous rescue that followed. In 2002, Roush crashed while flying over Alabama but was rescued by an off-duty Marine, showcasing the close calls and fortunate circumstances that have shaped his life.
For those intrigued by automobiles, the Roush Automotive Collection is open to the public. Visitors can step inside this large garage on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., where each car offers a unique insight into the world of racing and engineering brilliance.
Whether you’re a car buff or simply looking for a glimpse into the history of American automotive culture, the Roush Automotive Collection stands as a testament to family legacy, innovation, and a shared passion for speed.
