Detroit, a city filled with its vibrant culture and resilient spirit, is currently gripped by the ongoing mystery surrounding the disappearance of Na’Ziyah Harris. This 13-year-old girl was last seen on January 9, 2024, getting off a school bus in the area of Cornwall and Three Mile Drive, located on the east side of our beloved city. As the days turn into months, the search efforts have spread across multiple locations, including Clinton Township, Ann Arbor, and the Rouge River on Detroit’s west side.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office recently announced that Prosecutor Kym Worthy will hold a news conference on Thursday at 10:30 a.m., which has everyone hopeful for new information regarding Na’Ziyah’s case. While this news brings a glimmer of hope, it also serves as a reminder of the urgency and gravity of the situation.
Detroit Police Chief James White had indicated that the investigation is ongoing and has not gone cold, stating during a previous board meeting that “an announcement could come soon.” However, since that time, we have not received any updates for over a month now.
Back in August, the Prosecutor’s Office confirmed they requested a warrant in connection with the case but also noted that it would be misleading to assume that any charging decision was imminent. Many factors complicate the investigation, as Chief White mentioned that police have carefully considered all evidence and tips, which sometimes have led them on “wild goose chases.” He emphasized that, though the investigation continues, the outcomes may not be what everyone hopes for.
In a more focused investigation earlier this year, a 41-year-old inmate from Wayne County Jail was identified as a possible suspect. This individual had previously faced serious allegations involving the assault of a seven-year-old girl. In a twist of fate, it was the inmate’s cell phone records that directed law enforcement to various search locations, including Clinton Township, Ann Arbor, and the Rouge River. Sadly, search teams were left empty-handed after sifting through the waters of the river, causing Chief White to express his concerns that it’s starting to feel more like a recovery effort rather than a rescue operation.
The absence of Na’Ziyah has impacted not only her family but the entire Detroit community as well. There’s a palpable feeling of distress among residents, many of whom are rallying together to support Na’Ziyah’s family through this trying time. People are sharing her story, hoping to shine a light on her disappearance and renew interest in her case.
As Na’Ziyah’s birthday rolls around, she would now be 14 years old, and the community remains resolute in their efforts to search for her. This collective effort underscores the city’s determination to bring Na’Ziyah home safe.
If you or someone you know has any information regarding the whereabouts of Na’Ziyah Harris, it’s critical to reach out to the Detroit Police Department’s Major Crimes Division at 313-596-2260. Furthermore, if you prefer to remain completely anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up (800-773-2587), or submit information online. Every little bit of information could potentially be the piece of the puzzle that brings Na’Ziyah home.
As the news conference approaches, the hope remains strong that we may finally get a break in the case. The city of Detroit will continue to stand united, pleading for not just answers, but for the safe return of Na’Ziyah Harris.
