In surprising turn of events, Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin acknowledged that he mistakenly delivered an outdated version of his speech at the Republican National Convention. The senator’s address was written before the shocking assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump, offering a different tone compared to the uniting messages conveyed by his fellow Republicans in light of the shocking incident.
In the outdated version of his speech, Johnson targeted Democrats for their policies, identifying them as a “clear and present danger to America, to our institutions, our values and our people.” He also indicated that Democrats were ignoring American values, specifically those of the middle class and family values. He said, “But with President Trump and the Republicans, those forgotten Americans are forgotten no more.”
Notably, Johnson’s speech deviated from the general mood of unity at the convention in the aftermath of the assassination attempt, causing him to clarify the issue with the press.
Johnson explained to reporters that the first draft of his speech was erroneously loaded into the teleprompter at the convention, rather than the more recent version. The updated version of the senator’s speech had been revised following the Saturday attack at Trump’s rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania, reflecting a more conciliatory tone adhering to the unified message delivered by the party in response to the violent incident.
Both Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, have since emphasized unity and resilience in the face of adversity. “In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand united, and show our true character as Americans, remaining strong and determined, and not allowing evil to win,” the former president expressed on social media on Sunday. Trump further indicated that he had rewritten his upcoming speech accepting the GOP presidential nomination to concentrate on uniting the nation.
The targeted attack at the Trump rally resulted in the death of one attendee and injuries to the former president and two others. The alleged gunman, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, was eliminated by a Secret Service sniper. The FBI continues to investigate the motive behind the attack.
Despite the turmoil, Trump officially received the Republican Party’s nomination for president at the convention, as did his running mate, Vance, for vice president. This marked Trump’s first public appearance since the attempted shooting, his injuries evident from the bandages visible on his ear.
