Sex Offender from Livonia Facing Serious Charges

A 43-year-old registered sex offender from Livonia is in hot water after being indicted on charges of receiving and possessing child pornography, according to federal court documents. The man, Brett David Goodreau, was slapped with these charges last month by a grand jury operating in the Eastern District of Michigan.

Goodreau might be staring down the barrel of a hefty prison sentence if he is found guilty. His criminal history could see him serving sentences of between 15 and 40 years for each charge. As things stand, we have been unable to get a statement from his attorney.

The case against Goodreau started after law enforcement officials in Bakersfield, California arrested a suspected offender who confessed to sending Goodreau child pornography videos. Investigators found a chat thread on the suspect’s phone that included incriminating videos and discussions with Goodreau. He even asked the suspect to send similar videos, the federal complaint notes.

With their eyes squarely on Goodreau, Homeland Security agents in Detroit executed a search warrant at his home in Livonia on March 12. Their search resulted in the seizure of several electronic devices. They claim to have found roughly 25 images and 195 videos containing child pornography on Goodreau’s phone alone.

The agents say they were also told by Goodreau during their questioning of him, that he had an online account with a website reputed for hosting files of child pornography. The agents say Goodreau allowed them to log onto his account, whereupon they reportedly found as many as 1,690 images and 107 videos containing child pornography. The documents further state that he was in communication with an unknown individual and the two were exchanging child pornographic material.

In the past, Goodreau has been on the bad side of the law. He is registered in Michigan as a sex offender, a consequence of a 2003 conviction for groping a five-year-old boy. His actions at that time led to nine months in jail and a three-year probation. Current information shows that he has been in jail since July 17.

The seriousness of this issue underlines the importance of ensuring that relevant agencies and authorities continue to remain vigilant in order to maintain the safety and dignity of our children.
