Novi Welcomes Taco Lovers for the Third Annual Taco Fest

Novi, Michigan is buzzing with excitement this weekend as the Novi Taco Fest kicks off for its third year. Running from Friday to Sunday, the event takes place at Twelve Mile Crossing at Fountain Walk, conveniently located across from the Twelve Oaks Mall.

A Feast for Thousands

Organizers are expecting a bustling crowd of approximately 25,000 attendees this year. More than 35 taco trucks along with various other food and retail vendors are set up to satisfy everyone’s cravings. This fest is not just about tacos; it offers a range of delicious options for every palate.

Competitions and Fun Activities

Throughout the festival, a variety of competitions keep the crowd engaged. There are thrilling taco-eating contests, spicy hot pepper-eating challenges, and even cute dog contests to watch! Friday evening saw local contestant Charles Prater of Highland dominate the taco-eating contest. “Someone told me, ‘Hey, there’s a taco eating contest. I know you love to eat tacos. Do you want to get in on this?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I know I can eat tacos faster than anyone else here,'” he said confidently.

Another highlight of the festival was David Junker, who won the hot pepper-eating contest. What was his winning strategy? He revealed, “Eat fast and swallow as fast as you can.” The fun atmosphere is contagious as competitors and families enjoy the festivities together.

A Community Gathering

For many attendees, Taco Fest is more than just an event; it’s a community celebration. Chiquita Reed, who attended with her son, shared her love for the fest and the Fountain Walk. “The Fountain Walk is really where I come to hang out. So, I love to come here. All the festivals, including the barbecue festival that they had a couple of months ago, I was here,” she remarked.

The Origin of the Taco Fest

Karyn Stetz, the executive director of the Art As Healing Foundation, shared insights about the festival’s beginnings. Originally starting as an art fair three years ago, it quickly transformed into a highly anticipated annual event within the community. Stetz stated, “The mall is really happy with the event, and they like to promote it too. So, it’s very helpful for everyone out here on the west side of metro Detroit.”

Looking ahead, Stetz noted that planning for the 2025 Taco Fest will begin as soon as January, indicating the fest’s ongoing popularity and growth.

Conclusion

The Novi Taco Fest truly embodies the spirit of community and celebration. With its wide array of food, live competitions, and fun activities, this weekend’s festival promises to be a memorable occasion for taco lovers and locals alike. As the fest continues through Sunday, many attendees can anticipate more laughter, food, and memorable moments shared among friends and family.
