Construction crews received a shocking surprise when they reportedly unearthed what appears to be human remains at a work site in Traverse City, Michigan. The area where the findings were made is currently under construction as part of the Grandview Parkway project.
The primary finding was made near Oak Street on Friday afternoon around 4:30 p.m. Upon the discovery, work on the site was promptly halted; police were then contacted, and the area was secured for a detailed investigation. The Grand Traverse County Police are now in possession of the potential evidence and are continuing their investigation into the origins of the bone.
Authorities have, so far, only been able to confirm that the bone might be human. That being said, the conclusions drawn from initial investigations can only be verified following a comprehensive forensic analysis. If the bone is indeed human, police will then have the task of discerning whether it is linked with the original fill of the construction site or if it may be the remnants of an old burial ground.
It was not just the one bone that was discovered, however. When work resumed on Monday, more bones were reportedly found on the site, giving credence to the possibility that the entire area might be an old burial ground.
The suspect bone is now being examined by forensic anthropologists at Western Michigan University, in conjunction with the Michigan State Police. They aim not only to ascertain whether it is of human origin but, if it is, also its age, the gender of the individual, and the cause of death.
The police are not presently aware of any local missing person cases that these remains could be tied to. Officers are, however, carefully reviewing historical records in an attempt to shed light on the mystery.
The discovery came as the second stage of the Grandview Parkway project was occurring, having commenced on July 8. Local authorities and the construction company involved have not yet indicated how this discovery might influence the plans for the project.
