A compassionate winter sheltering program is set to roll out to assist those in need, ensuring they have a warm and safe space during harsh winter weather.

We’re happy to report that daytime warming centers will be operational across several participating locations throughout the winter, making it easy for anyone to drop in without needing to pre-register. Government office buildings will serve as warming centers during business hours, offering a friendly refuge from the cold.

Plus, public libraries, including those in Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, Chelsea, Dexter, Manchester, Milan, Saline, and Salem Township, will join in as warming centers during extreme cold spells. If temperatures or wind chills nosedive to 20 degrees or below, specific “winter havens” will open up to keep people cozy, with places like Briarwood Mall and the Washtenaw County Human Services Building designated as warming spots.

Overnight Shelter Options

On the weekends, overnight sheltering options will also be available for those in need. The Delonis Center in Ann Arbor offers these services every evening starting at 7 p.m. until mid-April, while families facing homelessness can seek refuge at Alpha House in Ann Arbor. It’s comforting to know that the community is coming together to ensure everyone has a place to go during these frigid months.

Environmental Initiatives

There’s more good news for nature lovers too! A recent $89,000 conservation initiative has been authorized to expand the Whitmore Lake Preserve by an additional 12 acres. This effort, managed by the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission, aims to protect the diverse wildlife habitat that benefits our local ecosystems.

Lastly, a federal program continues to lend a helping hand in addressing youth homelessness, supporting those up to 25 years old right here in Washtenaw County. This initiative reflects a commitment to our youth that many can get behind.
