Wayne County, MI – On a Friday night that was meant to kick off a holiday weekend, two separate incidents involving crashes into Michigan State Police (MSP) vehicles occurred, causing concern for safety on local roads.
The first crash took place around 7:25 p.m. on the southbound side of M-10. An MSP sergeant was stopped on the right shoulder with his emergency lights flashing after pulling over another vehicle. This is when a 27-year-old Detroit woman lost control of her Jeep SUV. Reports indicate that she swerved into the center lane to avoid hitting a car that had abruptly stopped in front of her.
In her maneuver to avoid a collision, the woman lost control of her vehicle, veered off-road to the right, crashed into a wall, and ultimately smashed into the back of the police cruiser. The state police sergeant sustained minor injuries and was quickly taken to a local hospital for treatment while, fortunately, the driver of the Jeep remained unhurt. State police officials noted that they do not believe impairment played a role in the crash.
“Not the way we wanted to start the holiday weekend,” said 1st Lt. Mike Shaw in a post following the incident. He added, “Fortunately, the sergeant only had minor injuries. The at-fault driver was cited for the crash. Please drive safely this weekend!”
Shortly after the first incident, around the same time, another MSP trooper was involved in a separate crash on Wick Road near Shook Road in Romulus. Department officials explained that while Romulus police were managing a large fight and had detained some suspects, a number of individuals fled into a nearby wooded area.
The trooper, who was stationed on the road facing west with lights on, had exited his vehicle when a 17-year-old motorist from Inkster sideswiped the patrol car. This caused minor damage to the police vehicle. It appears that passengers in the car distracted the teen girl, leading her to unknowingly cross into the double yellow lines.
Again, no injuries were reported in this incident, and there are no indications of impairment, although the driver was cited for her actions.
“We are continuing to see risky driving behaviors causing preventable crashes,” stated Lt. Shaw in a follow-up post. He expressed relief that no one was hurt in this incident, but emphasized that the patrol car would now be out of service for necessary repairs.
The evening of crashes raises serious concerns about traffic safety in Wayne County, especially considering the holiday weekend ahead. With many families set to travel, authorities are encouraging all drivers to remain attentive and cautious on the roads.
In light of these incidents, law enforcement officials urge motorists to prioritize safety by staying focused and aware of their surroundings. It is crucial for drivers to remember that even minor distractions can lead to severe consequences, not only for themselves but also for others on the road.
As the holiday weekend continues, MSP is hopeful for safe travels for everyone. Drivers are reminded to drive responsibly and make safe choices behind the wheel.
