Wayne County is buzzing with excitement this week as early results from Tuesday’s general election pour in. With results from 64 out of the 912 precincts reported, it looks like incumbent Democrats are holding steady in their countywide offices.
Taking the lead in the sheriff’s race is _Sheriff Raphael Washington_, a Democrat who is up for re-election. As of 1 a.m. Wednesday, Washington secured an impressive _63% of the votes_, leaving Republican contender _T. P. Nykoriak_ trailing at _37%_. Washington’s efforts over the past years have earned him a solid fan base, and as he seeks a second term, it’s clear he’s got a firm grip on the support of the community.
Meanwhile, longtime Wayne County Prosecutor _Kym Worthy_ continues to shine, garnering a whopping _78% of the votes_. She’s facing off against Libertarian candidate _Kerry Morgan_, who has collected approximately _20%_. Since stepping into her role in 2004, Worthy has made headlines for her remarkable push to test thousands of rape kits discovered in a Detroit police warehouse back in 2009, leading to countless convictions. Worthy remains an advocate for _gun safety legislation_ and has launched initiatives aimed at reducing firearm-related injuries among children. Morgan, a civil law professional, has expressed intentions to promote responsible firearm ownership including legal acquisition and safe storage.
Switching gears to Grosse Ile Township, there’s a significant proposal about the _privately-owned toll bridge_ connecting the island to the Downriver communities. Initial results indicate the measure to buy this bridge is ahead, with _73% voting in favor_ and _26% against_. A property tax millage would fund over _$59 million_ to purchase the bridge to gain control over this vital access point.
Residents have varying opinions on the necessity of taking ownership of the toll bridge. Supporters argue that they need control due to what they perceive as poor stewardship of the Wayne County-owned bridge, even if it means dealing with a property tax hike. The current free bridge is the only one rated for heavy vehicle traffic but is expected to close temporarily next year for crucial renovations.
Resident Paula Duffett, 63, voiced her thoughts on the matter, stating, _”I don’t think the township should own the bridge. It should really be a county responsibility, but the county didn’t do a good job with the other bridge.” However, she still voted in favor of the bond measure._
With the current free bridge limited to a _7.5 ton weight restriction_, concerns have arisen about how essential supplies, including groceries, fuel, and emergency services, will reach the island without the ability to transport heavy loads. On the other hand, resident Michael Altherr, 58, disagreed entirely and voted “no,” arguing the township could spend money more wisely than on bridge ownership.
Despite differing opinions, Altherr maintained his resolve, stating, _”I may be the only one that votes ‘no,’ and I’m good with that.”_ Residents remain hopeful as the final decision inches closer and many have expressed their trust in their elected officials to evaluate this deal properly.
Larry and Jennifer Riley are among the voters who supported the measure, with Jennifer adding, _”I trust that our elected officials who are wanting to make that decision vetted all that information as best they could, because they live here.”_ It looks like Wayne County is brimming with spirited discussions as elections unfold, and with many residents eager to see how these early results will shape the future of their community.
Stay tuned as we keep an eye on this engaging election race!
