Flooding along I-94 in Wayne County Resolved

Wayne County residents started their month on a soggy note as flooding engulfed sections of I-94, prompting closure of several segments of the freeway. Luckily, the water was quickly cleared, allowing for the reopening of the pavement on Friday afternoon.

No More Active Closures, All Road Stretches Cleared For Traffic

Earlier on Friday, the waters had prompted the closing of various spots including the EB I-94 at Conner Street, EB I-94 at Gratiot Avenue, WB I-94 at Outer Drive, and I-94 at French Road. However, thanks to quick responses, the Michigan Department of Transportation announced that there were no active closures due to lingering flooding.

Is It Safe To Drive?

While the flooding has been cleared along I-94, it’s important for residents to stay vigilant, especially with potential weather changes. Residents are reminded of the following safety tips during flood conditions:

  • Don’t drive through a flooded road. The depth of the waters might be misleading, and the roadbed could be washed out, resulting in a vehicle getting stranded or trapped.
  • Barricades are set up for safety. If you encounter a barricade, it’s best to turn around and find an alternate route.
  • Avoid taking shortcuts. Flood waters may block these routes. Stick to the designated paths.
  • Exercise extreme caution when driving at night. Reduced visibility might make spotting flood dangers more difficult.

Just six inches of water can reach the bottom of most passenger cars, resulting in a loss of control and possible stalling. One foot of water can float many vehicles, whereas two feet of rushing water can carry off most vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks.

Let’s remember to keep each other and our community safe by taking these precautions seriously. Drive safe, Wayne County!
