Race Heats Up for Wayne County School Board Seats

Greetings, folks of Westland! Here’s some important news for all of you with an interest in local education. This November, familiar and new faces alike across Wayne County are rolling up their sleeves and stepping up to run for seats on your local school boards. Itching to know who they are? Let’s dive in.

Wayne-Westland Community Schools

We’ve got Fred Weaver and Shannon Rochon in the race for the two open six-year terms. Fred Weaver isn’t a newbie – he’s a longtime trustee. Newcomer Shannon Rochon recently took a shot at Wayne’s state House seat. For the open two-year term, Andrew Ambrus will run unopposed. FYI, Bradley Gray and Mark Neal have decided to hang up their boots and won’t be running for re-election. The Wayne-Westland board has got its hands full right now, tackling some big budget issues as well as an investigation into its superintendent, John Dignan. Quite a roller-coaster, right?

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools

Here, Patti McCoin, Jennifer Vos, and Faize El-Khali are all vying for one open seat. The lucky winner will serve a partial two-year term. McCoin has been in the game since last year, serving on the board as an appointee.

Livonia Public Schools

For Livonia, we’ve got a crowded field with five candidates – Karen Bradford, Crystal Frank, Madeline Acosta, Pamela Morgan, David MacFarland – running for four open seats. Bradford, Frank, and Acosta have home-court advantage as they are currently serving on the board. Just so you know, Tammy Bonifield has decided to step away and is not seeking re-election.

Garden City Public Schools

Moving on to Garden City, Sarah Roffi and Lynette Childress, both incumbents, are up for reelection. There are three open slots, but only two have filed to run. This means the board will have to appoint someone to fill the third spot left open when Darlene Jablonowski chose not to seek re-election. Interesting times ahead, wouldn’t you agree?

So folks, that’s your rundown of who’s who running for the Wayne County school boards in November. Remember, Election Day is set for Tuesday, Nov. 5, so get ready to make your choices count!
