Originally established in 1848, this beloved restaurant is now equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen, custom designs, and elegant decor inspired by its equestrian history. Previously closed in 2012, the community rallied to bring it back, ensuring it continues to serve as a culinary cornerstone in the region.
In the heart of Metamora, a little village with a rich history, lies the newly invigorated White Horse Inn, celebrated as Michigan’s most historic restaurant. Thanks to a whopping $3 million renovation, this beloved establishment now stands ready to continue its legacy, beckoning locals and newcomers alike to experience its culinary delights. With roots tracing back to 1848 when a general store was first built, the White Horse Inn is not just a restaurant; it’s a piece of Michigan’s heart and soul.
The story of the White Horse Inn began in 1848 when Daniel Ammerman established the original general store just 12 years after Metamora was settled. By 1850, the building was purchased by Lorenzo Hoard, who transformed it into a cozy inn and stagecoach stop known as the Hoard House. With the cost of a stay set at just 50 cents, the inn was a welcoming haven that even provided accommodations for horses in a stable—a vital service during those traveling days.
But as they say, history is often colorful. The White Horse Inn has had its ups and downs, having served as a stop on the Underground Railroad and reportedly functioning as a brothel during different periods. Following a series of ownership changes, it was renamed the White Horse Inn in the early 1920s when Frank Peters took over. Unfortunately, after years of wear and tear, the beloved restaurant was forced to close its doors in 2012, leaving many in the community longing for its return.
But as the story goes, true community spirit never fades. Following the closure, residents rallied together, providing not only emotional support but also financial help through grants, including a notable $30,000 contribution from the Downtown Development Authority. It was in this time of need that Victor Dzenowagis and Linda Egeland, previous restaurant owners with a passion for food and community, stepped in to breathe new life into the White Horse Inn.
The recently unveiled renovations preserve much of the building’s treasured history while giving it a much-needed modern twist. A state-of-the-art kitchen now stands at the heart of the inn, allowing chefs to whip up delightful creations with ease. Along with custom-designed wood floors and antique fixtures, the inn now boasts a stunning fireplace made from fieldstone, sourced from a nearby barn dating back to the 1880s. This beautiful decor pays homage to the area’s equestrian history, making every inch of the inn feel steeped in tradition and warmth.
Now reopened since fall 2014, the White Horse Inn’s menu invites diners to indulge in a culinary adventure. Start off with tantalizing appetizers like Venison Chili and Whitefish Pate to whet your appetite. Follow it up with an array of soups, salads, and sandwiches, or opt for one of the hearty entrees such as 40-Day Dry-Aged New York Strip or Honey Plum Salmon. And for those with a sweet tooth, the dessert selection—featuring delights like Carrot Cake and Warm Bread Pudding—is bound to impress.
