Starting March 1, 2025, a major reconstruction project will overhaul the Eastbound Interstate 696 from Lahser Road to I-75. Spanning nine miles, this construction includes the complete road closure and maintenance on over 60 bridges. MDOT’s detour plans will guide drivers as they navigate increased traffic during this two-year project, which aims to enhance safety and infrastructure. Additionally, the initiative supports approximately 3,329 jobs, reflecting a commitment to modernizing the region’s transportation network.
Attention, all drivers and commuters! If you regularly travel on Eastbound Interstate 696, mark your calendars: starting March 1, 2025, you’ll need to adjust your route, as a major reconstruction project is ready to kick off. This isn’t just a little patching up; we’re talking about a complete overhaul of the road that’s served tens of thousands of drivers every day.
Here’s the scoop: the construction will involve the complete closure of the Eastbound I-696 stretch from Lahser Road to I-75, covering an extensive nine miles. Known as the busiest segment of this interstate, the road’s pavement, which dates back to the 1980s, has seen better days and is in dire need of some TLC. With the existing pavement deteriorating, a fresh rebuild is crucial.
But wait, there’s more! Over 60 bridges along this corridor will also receive some much-needed maintenance during this project. Is it any wonder that the entire operation is expected to take at least two years? It’s a big job, but one that promises to make our highways safer and smoother for everyone.
However, brace yourselves for an uptick in traffic. MDOT expects to see increased vehicles on all eastbound roads in the area, with delays possibly extending from nine to 13 miles. Not everyone will follow the suggested detour, and that could lead to some pretty congested conditions. So, don’t say we didn’t warn you!
